From new leadership to ARRA funding programs to enhanced peer review, there are significant changes on-going at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2009 and 2010. We invite you to participate in one or more of the day’s events to hear about what is happening at NIH and learn how to take advantage of these changes and new funding opportunities.

Office of the Provost Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, 2010-11:

September 29, 2009

TO:  CNS Faculty

FROM: Richard Schwartz, Associate Dean

College of Natural Science

SUBJECT: Office of the Provost Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, 2010-11

The College of Natural Science is pleased to announce the Office of the Provost Postdoctoral Fellowship program for 2010-11.  This program is intended to facilitate the recruitment of a diverse cohort of postdoctoral fellows at MSU. To facilitate recruiting, individuals may be recommended for a two-year appointment period.  Starting dates for the appointments must be July 1, 2010 or later.  Specifics of the appointments are as follows:

    1. Annual stipend up to $46,945.  Please note that while the stipend is not tax exempt, there is no withholding for FICA, state, or federal taxes for individuals appointed as postdoctoral fellows.
    2. An additional amount of $2,000 is provided for the initial year and may be used for travel, student labor, supplies and services.
    3. Provision of health plan coverage on the same basis as provided to other postdoctoral fellows, i.e. at no expense to the individual for appointments that are nine months or longer at 50% time or more.  The University will cover the premium costs of health plan coverage via the central fringe account.  This coverage applies only to the fellow’s health plan coverage. Family health plan coverage is not provided, however, the premium for family coverage may be paid from the $2,000 referenced in item 2, above.
    4. Payment for tuition up to 12 graduate credits to those who choose to be admitted and enrolled.
    5. Individuals must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Nominations should be forwarded to my attention (Richard Schwartz, schwart9@msu.edu) no later than Friday, February 5, 2010.  Nomination packages should consist of a description (no more than two pages) by the applicant of the research project that they intend to pursue, a letter of support from the faculty member sponsoring the postdoctoral fellow that includes an outline of the training activities to be undertaken and how the candidate will contribute to the diversity of MSU’s cohort of postdoctoral fellows, a letter of support from the Chairperson or Director, and a copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae.

The MSU-PostDoctoral Association and its steering committee are happy to congratulates Dr. Cheng Gu.

Dr. Cheng Gu has been selected to receive the 2009 Travel Fellowship Award from MSU-PDA.

Dr. Gu is a fellow PostDoc at the Soil and Crops department, his work at MSU is under supervision of Dr. Stephen Boyd. Dr. Gu receives the award to attend a coming meeting in November 2009, and he has one oral and one poster presentation accepted.

We hope all PostDocs at MSU, as well Dr. Gu, could take full advantage of this award for your own benefit and professional development.

Maria Alejandra Manzan, Ph.D

Chair of MSU-PDA

See PostDoc Pronunciation Wksp FS09 for more information on the workshops happening later this fall.

This is just a reminder about the regional “Career Roadmaps for Postdocs” Symposium, which will be held on Oct 10th, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to listen and learn from one of the most respected leaders in PD career coaching, Dr. Peter Fiske, author of the book “Put your Ph.D. to work?.

Registration for the event is very simple, just follow the link:
http://www.nationalpostdoc.org/meetings-and-events/michigan-meeting

The fee of $20 is just to cover the expenses of: breakfast, lunch and wine/beer reception following the symposium. Please confirm your registration as soon as possible, as the MSU-PDA is trying to arrange for transportation from MSU for attendees. Note that the agenda contains a biomedical science stream and a social sciences/humanities stream, so Postdocs from all disciplines will hopefully benefit.

MSU, the University of Michigan, Wayne State and Van Andel have put together a great agenda for you. We hope you can make it! This is a great opportunity for all Postdocs, particularly those getting ready for the next step!!!

We hope you can join us!

Sincerely,
MSU-PDA Steering Committee

Postdoctoral Survey

The 2009 Survey sponsored by the MSU PDA is online. The survey is anonymous and takes only about 10 minutes to complete.

Please take the time to complete it so we can help discover how best to serve the MSU postdoctoral community.

Please see attached flier regarding our annual Information and Networking Lunch, scheduled for Wednesday, September 23rd, from 11:45-2 pm in 1425 BPS. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the resources MSU has to offer postdocs, as well as meet and network with others from across the disciplines. Please email to let us know that you plan to attend, so that we can order the appropriate amount of food for the lunch. We hope to see you there!

The registration site is now open for the regional symposium. It is at:
http://www.nationalpostdoc.org/meetings-and-events/michigan-meeting. The fee is $20 and this includes breakfast, lunch and (hopefully) a wine/beer reception at the end.
